CD REVIEW: by Stefan Franzen for Badische Zeitung, Friday, 13th of April 2018
Translation: Sandra Geller Liebig

“These four wizards of percussion could be already admired together on stage by frequent Tamburi Mundi visitors. Now, this master summit of the festival director Murat Coşkun and his mentor Glen Velez from USA, together with the Israeli Zohar Fresco and the Italian Andrea Piccioni, can be enjoyed on CD. In this compilation everyone's own characteristics are highlighted: Glen Velez acts out to his inclination to Shaman music in the composition Penance Creek. Fresco counts on Sephardic traditions, sounding them out with a remarkably sensitive voice in the song Shecharchoret. The fact that even a pure percussion CD can scoop out a whole palette of sound colors is shown by Velez and Piccioni in their percussive dialogue between the Arabian riqq and the South-Italian tamburello. Eventually, melodic elements take effect in the mystical piece Reflections framed by hang, overtone singing and tuned frame drum. The intensity of the strong merging of these four master percussionists can be retraced in the play of the complex nine beat of Paam Maim.”

In addition to their live performances, the group of 4 musicians are committed and dedicated teachers of all aspects off frame drumming.

They have created a unique format for their individual workshop/classes:
“Rhythms in Three”, “Rhythms in Five”, “Rhythms in Seven”

are typical workshop titles, clearly presenting the options to students.
Each one of the four players focuses on a different rhythmic time cycle, for example 3, 4, 5, 7, or 9. Since these cycles are the framework of all music, this approach allows for a deep exploration of these universal ways of organizing rhythm.
Different cultures such as Arabic, Turkish, Indian, Italian and Central Asian create exciting frame drum rhythms and variations using this rhythmic framework.
Along with sharing their knowledge of the traditional material, each player gives insight into their own way of navigating through the endless possibilities rhythm provides.
Within that context the players teach basic to advanced frame drum techniques. Students can choose which cycle is of interest and receive an in-depth introduction.
